Technology – Its Affect on Our Lives, Has it Been Positive?

March 29th, 2011

In 1987 I had just finished my training in the Army and I was given orders to report to Ft. Wainwright, AK as my first duty assignment. I was then at Ft. Dix, NJ; I had just bought a used 1979 Mustang coupe for $435.00. I remember getting the oil changed and putting on some new tires for my drive from NJ to New Orleans, LA to visit my family. After spending a couple of weeks visiting friends and family I had to leave and head to my duty assignment in Fairbanks, AK. I didn’t have a credit card, a GPS or a cell phone and yet I made it the trip with traveler’s checks and a good old fashion road map (who in their right mind would drive a four hundred dollar vehicle over 4500 miles through a foreign country (Canada) today?). As a matter of fact I am not even sure if GPS existed back then or at least not for consumers in my income class (did I mention that I was a soldier?).

We now have all the technology that we could ever ask for and what has it turned us into? We are less courteous to one another, most of us really don’t know our neighbors like we used to and our kids don’t seem to be able to communicate at a level that a 9 year old could when I was growing up. I can definitely say that being 41 years old I have seen cell phones come of age and take off. I have seen the personal computer become affordable to most households and I have definitely notice the difference in the gaming systems…anyone remember Atari? Beeps…beep….beep…lol. We now have kids that refuse to go outside and play; their video consoles and hand held devices allow them to play with their friends without ever leaving their rooms (wireless connections). We have truly become a weaker society even though we have grown exponentially in technological advances.

If someone reading this can tell me that they have actually grown closer to their neighbors in 2010 than they were in 1990 (obviously you have to be at least 40yrs old) then you are truly blessed. The majority of us haven’t. I had an elderly lady who lived right across the street from me who died and I didn’t even know it until weeks later when I saw someone taking furniture out of her house. How shameful is that? When I was growing up in New Orleans this could have never happened. We used to sit out on the porch and talk with our neighbors and play in the streets (we didn’t have fancy back yards with privacy fences to keep the neighbors prying eyes out) and we knew everyone up and down the street. Now I have met and spoken a few times to 3 of my neighbors. So I am not blaming them for the lack of closeness but I am baffled at how we have gotten to this point. So I truly wondering has technology made us better.

Are we friendlier now? Do we still have manufacturing jobs now? Or here is a good one, when is the last time you visited a travel agent to reserve or purchase travel arrangements? In Medicine some of the breakthroughs in robotic surgery has been a tremendous help to patients and has reduce recovery time for certain operations by weeks. I am not one crying for the good old days are saying how much better life was back then. I do however make the observation in terms of humanity and the way we now deal with each other. Does anyone still go next door to borrow sugar?…lol (that might just be a down south thing, I live in Kansas now). So although I will not pass judgment on our societies behavior today under the influence of modern technology; I will still ask the question, on a whole has technology made us better people? Do we treat each other better than we do our internet friends? I may be different then most because I spent 21 years as a nomad living around the globe where ever Uncle Sam sent me so I can only speak from my experiences. I will ask you to make a conscious effort to treat the people that you live next to as though you truly want to be in a community with them just as much or more than we treat our online world of electronic friends who couldn’t give you a cup of sugar over the fence even if they wanted to.

Technology – Beware the Techie Time Vampire

March 29th, 2011

Most entrepreneurs spend a lot of time, money, and energy marketing their businesses. It’s wonderful that technology has made it possible for us to market our businesses to the world and to work from home (or anywhere else), but I am less than delighted about the time and money that learning to use all this technology sucks from us.

Early on we were told that technology would give us more free time, but unfortunately for those of us who are technologically disadvantaged the opposite is usually quite true. The reality is that many of us fall victim to the “Techie Time Vampire”, that insidious creature that sucks away huge blocks of our time as we try to master the technology around us and incorporate it into our business.

Most entrepreneurs start their own business, in part, to be able to control their time. Instead, most of us routinely find that technology is controlling both our time and our energy. We spend much of our time trying to make existing technology work as it should – the computer, the fax, our cell phones, etc. – and even more time trying to learn something new. We are taken in by the Techie Snake Oil Salesman who says, “It’s really easy,” then we find ourselves owning a bunch of gadgets but we don’t have enough information or resources to make them work for us to accomplish what we need to do now. For example, recently two bright, technologically competent women in my entrepreneurs group were talking about the eight hours it took to sync their new Blackberries. Look out! There’s a Techie Time Vampire on the loose here.

We have all been told how much better our lives will be as we travel the information superhighway. What someone failed to mention is that there are many potholes, wrecks and detours on this road and no superhighway AAA Motor Club you can join that will rescue you when there is trouble. Despite the Techie Snake Oil Salesman’s assurance of “quality customer service” many times you end up with the help desk from Hell and you are left to find your own rescuer.

Then, just when I think I have finally mastered all the technology I really need, I find that a new technology, like podcasting or YouTube or Facebook or “twittering”, is now indispensable and I must learn that, too, to keep my business progressing. It makes me tired just thinking about it.

I do like challenges or I wouldn’t be an entrepreneur, but the Techie Time Vampire sucks too much time, money and energy from my business. It leaves less time for me to put the skills and talents I have honed to use. Using those skills is what really brings joy and fulfillment to both me and my clients – that’s why I’m in business in the first place. For now, I’m staying in the slow lane and keeping a watchful eye out for the Techie Time Vampire.

Latest Computer Technology

Do you know what is inside your computer? Maybe you peeked when the service technician was installing something for you. When you first open up the CPU and look inside, a computer is a very threatening machine. But once you know about the different parts that make up a complete computer it gets a lot easier. Today’s computers consist of around eight main components; some of the advanced computers might have a few more components. What are these eight main components and what are they used for? We will start with beginner level details to get you started.

First is the Power Supply. The power supply is used to provide electricity to all of the components in your computer. It is usually a rectangular box and is usually positioned in one of the corners of the computer. To find it for sure, look to see where the power cable plugs into the back of the computer and you have found the power supply. Most power supplies today are calculated in wattage and come in 50 watt increments (500 watt, 550, 600, etc

Second is the Motherboard. All of the components are connected into the motherboard; it doesn’t mean that it is the brain of the computer. Yes it holds the brain and helps it act together with all the other components of the machine.

The third and a very important component of a computer is the CPU (Central Processing Unit), Known as the brain of the computer and nothing is going to happen without it. All major calculation performed by a computer are carried out inside its CPU. It is also responsible for activating and controlling the operations of other units of the system. The faster the CPU can do these calculations and give the correct answers, the faster the computer runs for the user. CPUs are now measured in gigahertz (Ghz) and they are at present up to our 3.8GHz or faster

A fourth component is the RAM (Random Access Memory). RAM is used as momentary working storage for the computer. We have different types of RAM memory with different speed, but it should match with your motherboard so that it can work properly. The more RAM you have in your computer, the better your computer will work.

The fifth component is the Hard drive. This is where you can store everything. Our material on the hard drive includes the operating system (Windows XP, etc), games, and different types of software, etc. over the year the capacity of the hard drive is continuously improving and in the interval of few years its capacity have gone from around 20MB to over 500GB and more. So you can store a lot more information on your computer such as games, pictures, videos, applications, and more.

Sixth component is Cooling fans. Often most computers come with one cooling fan or it might have several. Its help to cool down the heat generated by others components, Such as power supply, the CPU, and some high-end video cards. The work of all of your cooling fans is to get this heat out of the case so that nothing overheats and breaks. While most of the noise you hear coming from a computer can be credited to the cooling fans, remember to be tolerant. The cooling fan is your friend!

Our Seventh and final component is the mixture of several different devices. These are the Cd-rom, DVD drives, floppy Drive and Backup devices such as external hard drive.
